The Allen Family - Individual image by Matt Wain

Bespoke furniture design company Richard Baker Furniture created this kitchen for owners Alistair and Corinna.

Corinna explains about the idea of a fine art installation as a splashback:

"Years ago, I had this idea of a glass splashback with a photographic, abstract image on it and the idea stuck in my head. I always said if I ever do a new kitchen, that's what I want. We knew Beeseye – we'd bought several of its artworks before - we knew that they made pieces to measure and that they printed art on glass for splashbacks."

Alistair adds:

"The splashback has given a different dimension to the whole kitchen. It adds incredible warmth to the whole space and it's a fantastic conversation piece. At a party a couple of weeks ago everyone was talking about it. If you sit on one of the bar stools and have a look at it at the right height then it actually looks like one uninterrupted piece."

When the kitchen was mostly installed, Beeseye artist Matt Wain went to see the couple. He photographed the kitchen, where the splashback would be installed, and chatted to the owners about what they wanted to achieve. Matt then Photoshopped various images into the picture, so Alistair and Corinna could see what different splashbacks would look like when installed.

They chose this one, which is an Icelandic mud pool. Corinna says:

"We think it's wonderful – our kitchen has its own art installation. You can spend hours looking at our splashback and see something different every time. When we ask people what they think it looks like, we've been told everything from lasagne to beer!"
